Healing Myth vs. Healing Reality

The Myth: Healing is a straight line to perfection. The Reality: It’s a non-linear journey of ups, downs, and coming home to yourself.

We love a good transformation story. Pop culture and social media often sell us a version of "healing" that looks like a clean, straight line to perfection. We are led to believe that once we do the work, we will suddenly reach a magical destination where nothing bothers us anymore. However real healing doesn’t look like a glossy before-and-after photo. It’s much messier, much more human, and ultimately much more liberating. Here is a breakdown of what we think healing looks like versus what it actually looks like in practice. ### 1. Triggers Don't Vanish; Your Awareness Grows * *The Myth:* Never getting triggered. * *The Reality:* Being aware of triggers. Healing doesn't give you amnesia, nor does it erase your nervous system's history. You will still face situations that sting, startle, or upset you. The difference is that instead of reacting blindly, healing gives you a split second of *awareness*. You recognize the trigger, understand where it's coming from, and choose how to respond rather than letting your old defense mechanisms take the wheel. ### 2. Emotional Perfection vs. Emotional Freedom * *The Myth:* Never feeling "negative" emotions. * *The Reality:* Being able to feel ALL emotions. Toxic positivity tells us that a healed person is always peaceful, calm, and vibrant. In truth, trying to banish "negative" emotions like anger, grief, or jealousy is just another form of suppression. True healing expands your capacity to sit with all of your feelings without judgment. You learn that emotions are just data, not directives, and that a full life requires a full spectrum of feeling. ### 3. The Path is a Maze, Not a Highway * *The Myth:* Linear progress. * *The Reality:* Non-linear, ups and downs. We expect our growth to look like a stock market graph that only goes up. But real growth is cyclical. You might have a great month followed by a week where an old habit rears its head. Having a bad day or experiencing a setback doesn't mean you've failed or undone your progress; it just means you're on a *non-linear journey*. ### 4. From "Fixing" to Accepting * *The Myth:* Becoming the "best version" of yourself. * *The Reality:* Loving and accepting every part of yourself. The self-improvement industry often frames healing as a relentless project to "fix" a broken product. But as the caption of the video notes, “Most of us think healing means ‘fixing’ yourself.” True healing shifts the goalpost. It isn’t about striving for an idealized, flaw-free "best version" of who you are. It’s about integration—learning to love and accept the messy, flawed, and vulnerable parts of yourself that you used to hide away. Healing isn’t a destination where you become untouchable. It’s a continuous process of coming home to yourself, learning to ride the waves of life with a little more grace, a lot more self-compassion, and zero expectation of perfection.
